Thrilling Gold Medal claret from an impressive ‘crowd funded’ château, purchased from Louis Roederer with the help of over 400 investors. Rich, ripe and super smooth, it’s a magnificent example from the 2014 sleeper vintage. A Merlot-rich treat.

Buying great claret without stretching the budget is hard these days. If the label boasts a top estate and good vintage, in come the investors, up go the prices and off goes another precious claret to the cellar of a wealthy collector. Yet here’s a legend in the making, which we’ve snapped up from under their noses. Château Réaut, perched above the Gironde, was bought by Champagne house Louis Roederer in 2003. The plan was to create a claret as prestigious as their Champagne. But a board change saw the project shelved and the estate sold. The new owners include experts from other wine estates who are now making the most of recent investment with dazzling results. Decant this luscious claret an hour prior to enjoying with duck, lamb or beef.
