Château Cassagne Haut-Canon 2006

Canon-Fronsac AOC

From a small estate rated ‘very good’ by Robert Parker, this little known gem offers gorgeous ripe fruit just starting to give way to complex leather and spice notes. Canon Fronsac is a lesser known Right Bank area, hence the wine’s impressive value.

Until recently, wines from Canon Fronsac were regarded as good value alternatives to Pomerol and Saint Emilion, but nowadays they are recognised as great wines in their own right. Decanter advises: “The wines of Canon Fronsac are the best value in Bordeaux. Snap them up.” Cassagne Haut Canon is the property of Jean-Jacques Dubois and his family. Their charming farmhouse is perched on top of the Ronsac hill overlooking the Dordogne. Typically for the region, the estate’s 12 hectares of vines are mostly Merlot, with the two Cabernets playing supporting roles. Matured for a year in oak (40% new barrels, indicative of the serious quality of this claret), the 2006 is just now coming into its prime. Decant and enjoy with roast lamb, beef or duck.

"Magnificent, mellow claret from the superb, little known Canon Fronsac – delicious maturity, too" Jean-Marc Sauboua
