At a family farm on the windswept north Norfolk coast, close to Wells, lies Malt Coast brewery. Two brothers, Bruin and Max, ambitious to do their own thing with the family’s prize-winning heritage barley, set up a brewery. Their beers embrace all that’s great about their coastal location – a bracing sea breeze, sandy loam soils key to the Maris Otter barley and clear, sometimes blue skies. Since opening in 2017, they have had impressive success, supplying a good handful of Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as many Norfolk locals. This is a classic Saison, a style originally developed a century or so back to refresh farmhands in the middle of the day, hence its 3.6%. Dry and crisp with a gentle malty baseline, this is a refreshing beer.
