As you’re no doubt aware, craft beers are the height of fashion, driven by the popularity of US style IPAs. But there’s so much more than IPA to new wave craft brewing, as this magnificent stout will show you. It’s from Huddersfield’s Magic Rock Brewing Co, which was set up back in 2011 by brothers Richard and Jonny Burhouse and head brewer Stuart Ross. Although their beers have clever names and trendy artwork, it’s not a case of style over substance – a year after opening, they were named ‘2nd best new brewery in the world’ by independent ratings site RateBeer. For Dark Arts, they captured the classic flavour profile of a traditional stout – toasty malt and dark chocolate with a bitter finish – and added a lifted, hoppy character.
