Louis Guntrum Oppenheim Herrenberg Spätlese 2017

Rheinhessen QbA

Sublime Riesling Spätlese from the superb 11th-generation Louis Guntrum estate. The protected, horseshoe-shaped Herrenberg vineyard produces grapes of intense sweet ripeness beautifully offset by Riesling’s inherent acidity. Floral and lime scented.

Louis Konstantin Guntrum’s family has been making wines of remarkable finesse since 1848. He's the 11th generation dedicated to making fine wines, many scoring well over 90. The estate lies between Nierstein and Oppenheim in the Rheinhessen, growing all the classic varieties, with Riesling as the flagship. Herrenberg (meaning ‘lord mountain’) is one of their finest vineyards, with a climate that allows for the production of great Spätlese and Auslese. These are wines made from late harvested fruit for even greater ripeness, intensity and sweetness, balanced by freshness. 2017 proved best for Spätlese, so the hand picked grapes were gently pressed, fermented and left on lees before bottling. Delicious now, this medium white will cellar well.
