Les Trompettes d'Argent 2014

Bordeaux AOC

Little Malbec is grown in Bordeaux today, even less on the Right Bank’s Côtes de Castillon. How exciting then to discover a terrace of old vines at our historic estate that produces such dense flavoured grapes and such rich, blackberry scented wine.

We were delighted to extend our Côtes de Castillon vineyards in 2008, when we bought a small 14th century property. We knew the potential of the vineyards was amazing. Well, it is right next door to Saint Emilion – a region that’s been hailed as “already good enough to make many Saint Emilion proprietors blush” (Oz Clarke). Indeed, only a narrow lane divides the two. The former owner, a colourful lady, had neglected many of the vineyards and these are being replanted. But not this Malbec. The soil is hard and stony, yet well positioned to catch the sun, so the vines work hard and the grapes ripen slowly. Add a little Merlot and Cab and the result – gorgeous, velvety dark fruit with a wrap of oak from a year in barrel. Lamb is an ideal mate.
