More information
One thing the Languedoc does extremely well is Grenache, Carignan and Syrah blends from old, low-yielding vines. The best examples are made by extraordinary winemakers with passion and talent. Jeff Carrel stands out. He calls himself eclectic but when you spend a little time with him tasting and listening, you are left with one overriding impression. The man is devoted to making great wine. Les Darons means ‘the fathers’, a veiled reference to the old, free-standing bush vines that make a pivotal contribution to this wine’s intensity and complexity. Open a bottle when you have time to appreciate it. Its rich, bramble, tar, wild herb and mineral character deserves quiet contemplation. And something hearty of the red meat or veggie kind.
