This is a rich, taffeta-soft Syrah from Languedoc winemaker for Le Chai, Mark Hoddy. He sourced grapes from two great vineyards, one high slate, the other clay limestone, to get a fabulous balance of smoky black olive and herbal, silky black fruit.

La Syrah de Rêve is the sort of Syrah that dreams are made of – fabulous rich black fruit, mineral finesse and savoury smoky liquorice character. And unlike the wines of the northern Rhône (where Syrah is king), it doesn't cost the earth. It's made by the talented winemaker, Mark Hoddy, behind many of our handcrafted southern French wines. He searches out the best parcels of grapes that lack a fancy address – for this wine, one parcel came from high-up slate slopes, which lends a more savoury, mineral character, and one from clay limestone, lower in the valley, which adds voluptuous cassis fruit. Finished with 10 months in French oak, this is a seriously good red. Ideally decant first – we recommend serving with roast lamb or at a barbecue.
