Calatayud has the highest vineyards in this part of Spain, some up to 1350 metres. They make outstanding, intensely flavoured Garnacha reds, a favourite of winemaker Norrel Robertson. However, in a remote mountainous spot in Calatayud's Ribota Valley he came across a small vineyard of 25 year old Tempranillo bush vines. Warm sunny days, with a big drop in temperature at night, plus minimal rainfall, produce healthy grapes of superb intensity, especially at miserly yields of just 20hl/hectare (less than half that of smart Bordeaux). The fruit was so good that our Flying Scotsman decided to make this luscious, weighty and intense red purely from Tempranillo. It sees no oak, just lots of dark, weighty fruit. Great with tapas, jamón or pasta.
