King in the North 2017

Vin de France

No wonder this is King of the North. It's a fabulous pure Syrah red, powered by a portion from highly prized Hermitage and another from slightly lower down the hill in Crozes Hermitage. A silky, deep masterpiece from the outstanding Cave de Tain.

Andrew Jefford is a great fan of the Cave de Tain, whose finest wines like Hermitage “can compete head to head with leading producers’ top ‘parcellaire’ wines”, he declares. Named France’s best wine co-op in 2015, Cave de Tain provide exemplary quality and value. They have the luxury of being able to source grapes from the length and breadth of the Rhône Valley, from the fabulous appellations of the north (Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Cornas are all included in this blend), to Collines Rhodaniennes in the south. Each plot of grapes was vinified separately, then the wine was blended by Daniel Brissot to create the perfect balance of deep fruit, peppery spice and tannins. Succulent, silky and ripe – serve with lamb or a rich casserole.
