In the Czech region of Moravia, close to the Austrian border, in the little town of Breclav lies a brewery that has been making beers for most of the last 500 years. Nationalisation, then privatisation in the 20th century caused a short hiatus but, thankfully, since 2013, beer has once more been flowing non stop. Kanec means wild boar and there are good few of those roaming in nearby forests. Eastern European hops of Saaz and Sladek lend the brew its pleasing bitterness, while locally sourced Moravian malts – Pilsen and Munich – from a malthouse close by gives the beer a real biscuity character and spice. Third important element is the water, taken from artesian wells. Well chilled, Kanec 12 makes a refreshing, satisfying glassful.
