After sampling the delights of America’s West Coast craft beer culture, Cape couple Ross and Meghan McCulloch were inspired to spread the word to South Africa. Armed with little more than energy and enthusiasm, they set up Jack Black’s Brewing Co in 2007. The name is a tribute to the American pre-prohibition brewer John Jack Black, whose family reared cluster hops, the variety Ross and Meghan used to create their first experimental batches. Now, a decade on, they’ve opened a shiny new brewery with greater capacity, which means we can enjoy Jack Black over here. They may have grown, but it’s still a family operation, employing people from the neighbourhood and using locally sourced ingredients. Crisp, refreshing, and perfect with a braai.
