Infierno Monastrell 2014

Yecla DO

If big, juicy, flavour packed reds are your thing, then the wines of Yecla in southeastern Spain are a must. Infierno is a top, old-vine Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) and is packed with intense, sun-baked dark fruit, potent spice and wild herb notes.

Spain’s wines have never been better value, and lesser known regions like Yecla are especially worth exploring. This characterful red is the latest find from our Buyer for Spain, Beth. It’s made by Mariano López at Bodegas y Viñedos del Mediterráneo, a renowned producer of Monastrell. The grapes were selected from vineyards 750 metres above sea level where temperature variations and poor limestone soils are ideal for very high quality grapes with great concentration of flavours and aromas. Infierno has 15% alcohol but its massively fruity character keeps it perfectly balanced. Short ageing in French and American oak has added spicy richness. Serve at cool room temperature (16 to 18°C) with roast rack of lamb, beef pot roast or hard cheeses.
