James Clarke is the fifth generation of his family to run the quintessentially English Hook Norton brewery in the heart of the Cotswolds, where local deliveries are still made by shire horse drawn dray. Ales are brewed from four natural ingredients: malted barley, hops, yeast, and spring water drawn from deep wells beneath the brewery. All the barley and the majority of the hops – notably Fuggles, Goldings and Challenger – are grown in Britain, and the brewery puts great store by traceability, knowing the crop year, the farmer, even the field. Hooky bitter is subtly balanced and golden, enticing you with its hoppy aroma and malty flavours. At 3.5% it’s the classic session beer that goes very well with a ploughman’s lunch or a meat pie.
