In 1841 Johann Christian Henschke set sail for South Australia and by 1842, a few serious calamaties later, he had settled in the Adelaide Hills. That was six generations ago and over that time the family has slowly built up this superb estate and its 100 hectares of vines. They specialise in Riesling and also great reds like this and their supreme, 100 point flagship wine, Hill of Grace. Aussie critic James Halliday has named them 2021 Winery of the Year, adding to their already huge haul of awards. Today Stephen and Prue Henschke run the estate, the former as winemaker, the latter as viticulturalist, joined by their three children. Grapes for Johann's are from old, dry grown bush vines, the wine aged in hogshead barrels. A very fine red.
