If we were to ask you what food and drink you associate with Vienna, you might say coffee and cake, or perhaps Grüner Veltliner. Well, young Heinrich Hartl wants you to say Pinot Noir. He’s in charge of his family estate, which is about an hour south of Vienna, nestled in the rolling countryside of the Thermen region. As a wine area, in terms of lofty reputation, it shares no similarities with Burgundy. But in terms of landscape, climate and geology – those elements that can actually make a wine taste better – the two places are largely comparable. Come harvest, Heinrich’s carefully tended Pinot Noir is brought to his gravity fed cellar, where it is vinifed and aged for a year, half of it in new oak. A must try with soft cheeses.
