Guelbenzu Lombana 2006

Vino de la Tierra Ribera del Queiles

An exciting new addition to our list, a mature, complex red from a tiny region in NE Spain. It's a barrel aged blend of Spanish grapes Graciano and Tempranillo, with Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. 14 years ageing has lent layers of mellow richness.

Named after the river than runs thorough it, Ribera del Queiles was established in 2003. It lies on the border of Aragon and Navarra and although the area is only tiny, the family knew it was unique, with its sandy, gravelly soils and high altitude vineyards. Guelbenzo has been making wines there since 1851 and was winning awards as long ago as 1880. In 1992, Ricardo Guelbenzu took over the reins and started a new era of growth, with an eco-friendly winery, ideal for making and ageing wines, as well as being respectful of the environment. His Lombano is a delicious, mellow blend of Graciano and Tempranillo with Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, aged 10 months in oak. Wonderful richness and complexity, a wine to savour with plain roast meats.

"Perfume of cedar, mineral, espresso and black cherry. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and concentrated" Jay Miller
