Gold Star Zinfandel 2016

California

Big, bold fruit is exactly what we love about the burly American grape Zinfandel. And, as its name suggests, this wine deserves a Gold Star! It’s from the prized Lodi region and balances all the dark big on plum fruit with a cherry bite freshness.

Zinfandel is California’s most historic grape. Planted in the 1850s, it’s survived frosts, phylloxera, even prohibition! Indeed, the state can boast vines well over 100 years old, but Gold Star has a much younger story. It comes from Lodi – the Wine Enthusiast’s Wine Region of the Year 2015. It’s home to amazingly approachable reds with unfailingly big, bold flavours, ripened in the heat of the region’s 261 days of sun per year. Even better for Zinfandel are the rocky soils, broken up by years of gold mining activity – they’re great for reflecting heat back onto the vines for even more ripeness! The O’Neill family – third generation winemakers – have created this punchy red for us. They recommend serving Gold Star with steak and barbecues.
