In recent years, the Grant family have been building their range of smooth Speysides, and if you like a rich, rounded whisky, you’ll love their luxuriously fruity 18 year old. Around 65% of a malt’s flavour and character comes from the barrel it’s aged in, and the team at Glenfiddich use a blend of casks formerly filled with bourbon or Oloroso sherry. Before filling, these are treated in the distillery’s on site cooperage – they are specially toasted to caramelise the oak’s wood sugars and help it release its flavour giving properties. After ageing, whiskies from both types of barrel are blended in small batches in large oak tuns, before being left for 9 months to mellow to perfection. A rewarding fireside treat, with 18 years of maturity.
