Gabel Spätburgunder Tradition 2016

Pfalz Qualitätswein

This silky, barrel-aged Pinot Noir could easily be Burgundy, except for the price. It’s an excellent example of how well Germany’s Pfalz does this grape. Third generation winemaker Oliver Gabel has crafted this beautifully balanced, pretty fruit red.

Oliver Gabel is the third generation of his family to run the Pfalz estate and he’s bursting with new ideas. The property isn’t large, at 21 hectares, but since Oliver took over in 2014 they’ve focused on what they do best – Riesling and Spätburgunder. Oliver has been experimenting since he was 19. He studied at Neustadt, then travelled the world to learn more. Since his return, they pick the grapes earlier, do a gentler extraction and use less oak. And we’re delighted with the result – a pretty fruit, savoury oak Pinot Noir with lovely ripeness. The vineyards are high, but they are very well protected. As a result the climate is so warm, they can even grow figs. Nothing figgy about this red. Delicious with white meats and mushroom risotto.

"Oliver has the magic touch and makes a very charming yet quite serious Burgundian Pinot Noir" Kirsten Willis
