Ferraton Père et Fils Ermitage Les Dionnières 2017

Hermitage AOC

Hermitage is a tiny appellation with a huge reputation in the northern Rhône, and Les Dionnières is "serious stuff" (Jancis Robinson). Awarded 95 Points by Wine Spectator, this is a very fine red from a family estate run by renowned Chapoutier.

Founded in 1946, Domaine Ferraton has always been a highly regarded estate. Yet since the Chapoutiers have come on board quality has rocketed. The Ferraton family started working with Michel Chapoutier in 1998, the latter buying the estate outright in 2004, but running it very much as an independent concern, with the family still at the helm. Les Dionnières is a sublime, delicately nuanced Hermitage using grapes from a parcel of 40 year old organic Syrah planted on sandy, clay and pebble soil. This lends a real finesse and structure to the wine. 14 months in oak, 20% new, lets the fruit shine through with a measured influence of oak. With four years age, the wine has ripeness and lengthy complexity. Great with game or mushroom risotto.
