Erta e China Rosso 2019

Toscana IGT

Paolo Masi was the proud winner of the ‘Best Sangiovese’ Trophy at the world’s biggest wine show in Vienna and shows himself a grand master of the Chianti grape. That makes up half the blend alongside Cabernet in this rich, Super Tuscan style red.

We’ve been buying from Paolo Masi's estate in premium Rufina for 30 years now. It won its first Gold medal in 1929, when Paolo's grandfather was in charge and today still has a reputation for wines of superb quality and value. In 2019 Luca Maroni awarded them '3rd Best Wine of Italy'. Paolo took over in 1992 after he'd graduated top of his year. Since then he's worked hard to fine tune methods in the vineyard and winery – planting better clones, studying the soils and working gently in the cellar. One of his top wines, Erta e China means ascent and descent and refers to the way the vines are planted up and down the hill. Aged for 14 months in French oak casks, it's a dense red. Decant early and serve with a rich ragú or fine pasta dishes.
