El Cismático is pure old-vine Garnacha from The Flying Scotsman - a terrific winemaker, specialising in the style. This rich, hugely complex red is only made in top years and 2018 is the best to date. Herbal and sweetly spiced berry fruit length.
Master of Wine Norrel Robertson is the El Escoce Volantes (Flying Scotsman). Having taken a degree in politics, he started off in wine retail, then decided he'd rather be making it! He gained experience in the New World, before falling in love with the old Garnacha vines of hidden Spain, his speciality. El Cismático is a top cuvée, using grapes taken from four high altitude vineyards, 75-85 years old. Soils are the best – red clay, marl and limestone with pudding stones on the surface to add ripeness (it needs it that high up!). Very much handcrafted, this wine is fermented in open top vats, with plunge down of the skins (by hand) and 13 months in barrel. It's subtle and layered, with pepper, cloves, herbs and red fruits. Mesmirising.
"Floral, expressive, showy and exuberant, peachy and juicy, with very fine tannins, with good acidity"
