If you enjoy fabulous quality Syrah or Shiraz you’re in for a real treat with this nicely evolved, six year old champion from Chile. It’s immensely rich and brooding, and needs a good hour in a jug or decanter to reveal the full extent of its charms.

Donna Maria is from Viña Falernia, owned by our good friends Aldo Olivier and Giorgio Flessati. They were the first to put Chile’s Elqui Valley on the wine map, winning a Trophy with their first Syrah release – unheard of for this pisco producing area. Made from partially air-dried grapes, like an Italian Amarone, this inky dark wine is a tribute to Aldo’s mother, who left northern Italy in 1951 with her husband and seven children for a new, better life in Chile. The wine is pure Syrah, hand picked into small baskets and fermented at their state of the art winery. After six months ageing, partially in French oak barrels, the wine was bottled unfiltered to preserve its immense richness of flavour. Enjoy its dense fruit with red meat dishes.

"Beautifully mature, rare as hens' teeth red. Ridiculously rich, smoky, black-fruited wine. A treat" Oz Clarke
