Pure Syrah is rarely found in the wines of the Languedoc Roussillon, it's usually reserved for the pricy reds of the northern Rhône. From the warm, ripe 2019 vintage and vineyards close to Corbièries, this has dark, smoky black fruit and spice.

Our scout and buyer for the Languedoc is Mark Hoddy. A resident of Bordeaux, he's always racing down to the Languedoc and further south to the Roussillon, to check out the vintage and the finest parcels of wine. This is an ace find Mark discovered via an old friend in Corbières. Close by is Domaine La Lirande, a small estate that enjoyed such a great vintage in 2019 (it was exceptionally hot and dry) that the Syrah stood out for quality. Too good to blend, the winemaker kept it solo. Mark loved what he tasted and signed us up for the lot. Seductive ripe black fruit, velvety, with smoky liquorice and wild herb notes. It's young, so best with hearty dishes in its first year, and great at a barbecue too. Come 2021, it'll be tasty solo as well.
