From a domaine whose wines are "getting better and better" (Jancis Robinson MW), this is a beautifully balanced, intense fruit Morey. Julia Harding MW calls it "incredibly long, athletic". A great vintage 1er Cru from highly praised Benoit Stehly.

Georges Lignier is a fourth generation family domaine with enviable vineyards holdings, including the largest share of Grand Cru Clos Saint Denis. The family has a total of 16 hectares of vines, dotted over 50 premium parcels throughout Burgundy. In 2008, Georges's nephew Benoît Stehly took charge, "since which time the wines have become finer and finer" (Jancis Robinson MW). Clos des Ormes is a top Morey 1er Cru, lying on the hill just below Grand Cru Clos de la Roche. Named after the once abundant, now endangered, elms that dotted the hill, this 1er Cru produces superb, well structured wines with dense fruit and great ageing ability. Still young, the wine is best decanted to allow its complex flavours to unfurl. A great red with game.
