Even well versed Burgundy aficionados may have trouble placing the tiny appellation of Ladoix Serigny. As wine writer Hugh Johnson explained, “It’s villages like Ladoix that answer the question ‘Where can we buy good, authentic Burgundy for less than a fortune?’” Ladoix’s vineyards stretch up the hill of Corton to encompass both the great Corton and Corton Charlemagne. The Ravaut family have been tending vines there for six generations. It was Vincent and Pierre’s grandfather who, in the 1920s, planted vines, selling the wine to local clientele. He won a Gold at Paris in 1936. Today the brothers continue the work and are gaining a great reputation with superb wines like this. This is a supreme barrique-aged Pinot Noir. Open early or cellar.
