An ample, juicy fresh red starring Merlot. Not typically Italian, this grape grows well on the eastern side – in Abruzzo and gastronomic Romagna. Combining rich cherry and berry notes with lively freshness, this is an easy going red, sure to please.

Merlot is loved the world over for its velvet smooth fruit, and is the star, of course, in Saint Emilion and Pomerol. The grape isn't native to Italy but, judging by its delectable wines, it's very well suited. In fact it's been grown in parts of the country for decades. Il Basso's grapes were sourced from both Romagna and Abruzzo, Romagna being home to the gastronomic delights of Parmesan, Parma ham, prosciutto, balsamic vinegar and rich pasta. Typically its wines have a freshness that complements the cuisine. You’ll certainly find that in Il Basso, the acidity balancing the darker fruit notes of the riper Abruzzo Merlot. Il Basso is designed to be all fruit, no oak – tasty on its own or with white meats, vegetable kebabs or simple pasta.
