Finca Montalvillo Blanco 2018

Rioja DOCa

An exciting new white Rioja from the Murúas, the family behind our great value Barón de Barbón wines. The grapes are from their Montalvillo estate in eastern Rioja. High up vineyards ensure appealing lemony zip and blossom notes. Very appetising.

Finca Montalvillo is a new project for Javier Murúa. It lies in Rioja Oriental, its extensive vineyards at 520 metres in the Sierra de Yerga foothills. The cooler climate means added freshness and aroma in the grapes, while the large pebbled soil helps regulate the temperature to avoid extremes. We all think of Tempranillo as a red grape, but there is a little known white version too. It was discovered in a vineyard in 1988, a natural mutation of the red variety. It's now an authorised Rioja grape and producing delicious, crisp whites like this. 2018 was a top year, particularly for its whites. A long, slow ripening has harnessed lovely aromas and fruit. If you like crisp Sauvignon, give this white a try. Great solo or with lighter dishes.

"Deliciously fresh, unoaked white Rioja, a very tasty alternative to Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio" Beth Willard
