Syrah grows exceptionally well in the Rhône Valley, Australia, and elsewhere, but Sicily without doubt offers some of the best value of all. Di Prima is our latest discovery and a truly mouthwatering example with impressive old vine richness.

Sicily’s vineyards are as extensive as South Africa’s and it has a great climate, too. No wonder we discover great wines whenever we visit. This gorgeous Syrah comes from Davide di Prima whose grandfather Gaspare planted the vines decades ago. The vineyards lie on high hills overlooking the Lago Arancio (Orange Tree Lake) reservoir. Originally a river, it was dammed in the 1950s. On rare occasions the water level drops to reveal the ruins of a Moorish temple. Davide’s family used to grow grapes for the local co-op but began bottling their own wine in the 1990s. With deep colour, cherry, spice and chocolate character, this delicious Syrah goes well with grilled red meats and full flavoured local dishes such as the vegetarian Caponata.
