How often do you get to drink a Italian Syrah? One with 15 years' age is even rarer. It's from a pioneering estate in southeast Tuscany, owned by the d'Alessandro family since 1967. From the 1980s they experimented to discover which varieties suited the soils and climate. The surprising find was that Syrah and Viognier came out best. They now make fresh and fruity wines from the younger vine grapes, reserving the fruit from older vines for their crus – Il Bosco, their flagship red and Fontarca their top white. Blending three parcels of grapes from vines planted in 1993, 1995 and 1997, Il Bosco was aged in barrel for two years. Embrace aromas of cocoa bean, cigar box and wild herbs with gentle red berry fruit. A fine match to ragu pasta.
