Coline d'Enira 2016

Thracian Lowlands

Sumptuous, oak-aged, claret style red from Bordeaux supremo Stephan von Neipperg. Winemaker is Marc Dworkin, formerly of Château Clarke and now working in Bulgaria. Blind tasted, it’s more like a cru classé. Fabulous deep fruit and velvety richness.

Bulgarian reds were top of the pops in the 1970s. Quality was good and the value unmatched. Now, wines from the exciting Bessa Valley Winery are showing the country has lost nothing of this talent. The estate is the brainchild of a big name in Bordeaux, Count Stephan von Neipperg, who also owns three top Grand Cru properties in Saint Emilion. He recognised that the limestone soils and gentle climate were similar to that of Saint Emilion. He’s employed ex-Bordeaux winemaker Marc Dworkin, who treats this wine like a cru classé claret, vinifying the different grapes separately and ageing in top quality barriques. Merlot and Petit Verdot are joined by Syrah for a delicious point of difference. Decant and enjoy with roast lamb or pan-fried duck.

"Complex - all manner of fruits in there - redcurrants, black cherries, blackcurrants. Delicious!" 5-Star Online Review
