Château Laroze Grand Cru Classé 2010

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AOC

Note the word ‘Classé’ because it matters. In Saint Emilion there is a world of difference between a Grand Cru and a Grand Cru Classé. And in Château Laroze you can definitely taste the extra quality, helped, it must said, by a beautiful vintage.

Château Laroze is an old family property on the gentle west slope of the Saint Emilion plateau. It's been the prized property of the Meslin family since the 1880s, whose ‘park’ area stands out as a green triangle among the vines. Surprisingly it hasn't been planted with Merlot. The winemaking is carried out by its distinguished neighbour, the owner of Château Angélus. It’s the judgement of the owner and consultant, the timing of their operations and the strictness of their selections, that upgrade wines like this from good to fine, or in this case very fine. From the 5 star 2010 vintage, this is top notch Grand Cru Classé now showing perfect maturity, although it can be cellared longer. It calls out for beef or a rich, hearty stew.

"Cool, mouth-perfuming, and unwinding on your palate to a lovely web of complexity. Take it slowly" Hugh Johnson
