Château La Serre 2020

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe AOC

Already with 94-95 points from James Suckling, this is an outstanding Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classé, from a vintage producing "stunning wines" (Jancis Robinson). Such lovely purity of fruit, with exotic spice, supple and full of charm. Cellar.

Château La Serre is a small, well-positioned estate just outside the town of Saint Emilion, close to Pavie Macquin and Trottevieille. Its construction dates back to the 17th century and today winemaking and vineyard management is all done by the great Moueix family of Pétrus fame. Its name means 'greenhouse' and refers to the lovely sunny exposition of its 7 hectares of vineyards. As you'd expect, these are nearly all planted to Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc. In 2003, its cellars were modernised, the stainless steel vats removed and new concrete vats installed, the much favoured option. Ageing in 50% new French oak barrels lends a real finesse and richness to the wine. Nicely chewy, it shows polish and finesse.

"Redcurrant, berry and light chocolate character. It’s creamy and chewy. Shows polish and refinement" James Suckling
