It's not often that Robert Parker awards a wine the full 100 Points, but for the 2009 La Mission Haut-Brion he has done just that. A superb wine to match the finest First Growths and one that will be enjoyed by the lucky few for decades to come.

Originally part of the Haut-Brion estate, La Mission Haut-Brion owes its current reputation for excellence to Frédéric Woltner, who bought and modernised the property in 1918. As Robert Parker, the eminent American wine critic, notes in his book titled Bordeaux, “Frédéric and his son Henri were responsible for the ascendancy of La Mission Haut-Brion’s wine quality to a level that matched and frequently surpassed the first growths of the Médoc and neighboring Haut-Brion.” Indeed, in 1922 its wines fetched more than Châteaux Margaux, Lafite and Latour. A legend in the making, this superlative claret will reward patient cellaring. Stand a bottle upright for a day, then decant carefully. Enjoy with classic fare – roast beef, lamb or venison.
