Tony Laithwaite has long wanted to make an estate white at Château La Clarière. Situated in red wine Castillon, it has no white grapes. Now, with some top vineyards he has crafted this barrel fermented, lees aged white. Beautifully long and balanced.

Lying on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Castillon is known for its clarets. Indeed the appellation may only produce red wines, but that hasn’t stopped the team at Château La Clarière wanting to make a white of equally fine standing. A few years back they discovered vineyards close by, just across the river, with superb terroir and potential. They have now taken on the vines ‘en fermage’ and, with total control, can make an estate bottled white. It’s a rich 50/50 blend of bright Sauvignon Blanc and richer Sauvignon Gris, close in style to wines of pricy Pessac Léognan. Oak fermented, lees stirred, then aged in these same, part-new barrels, it has a lovely seam of spicy vanilla weaving through the citrus and ripe peach notes. Drink now or cellar.

"Luscious creamy peach, underscored by citrus intensity and all wrapped in vanilla spice" Jean-Marc Sauboua
