Critics have been raving over the sweet wines of Doisy-Védrines, a tiny château next to the Premier Cru Sauternes estates Climens and Coutet. With 90-91 points, it's glorious now with honeyed orange and lemon notes; amazing in years to come.

Doisy-Védrines has been in the Castéja family since 1840 and is today run by Pierre Castéja. He maintains exceptionally high standards at the cellar and will declassify a whole vintage if he believes the wines won’t be up to Grand Vin standard. Batches of grapes are fermented separately in oak barriques, then left to mature. After a year, each vat is tested to see if it's worthy of inclusion in the Grand Vin. 2020 was a low yielding vintage in Sauternes with botrytis – the condition essential for producing the world’s finest dessert wines – developing later than usual in autumn, giving this vintage a lovely purity. Suckling calls it “a bright, fresh Sauternes”. Savour on its own or with a strawberry tart with crème anglaise or blue cheeses.

"A bright, fresh Sauternes. Attractive honey, sliced-apple and pear character. Fresh finish" James Suckling
