Pomerol is home to the most superb of Bordeaux’s Merlot-based reds, but they come with a stratospheric price tag. Just across the little River Barbanne, however, lies the satellite Lalande de Pomerol appellation. “Many of today’s Lalandes are of an equal quality to a middle-ranking Pomerol. They have the same opulent richness” says Roger Voss in Decanter magazine. The light sand and gravel soils here yield grapes of the same high standard – mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc – with similar luscious red fruit and plum notes. At Château Canon Chaigneau the Marin Audra family and their small team nurture the very best from their vines, and have met with award winning success. The mellow 2002 is smooth with gentle fruit and great with roast beef.
