Château Canon 2017

Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé AOC

With 96+ points from Wine Advocate and 95 from Suckling, this is a very fine release from a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate. It's still tightly closed, but the potential black cherry, plum, kirsch and exotic spice that will come through are apparent.

Château Canon is one of the most famous names of Saint Emilion and fine Bordeaux. The historic estate dates back to the 1700s and in 1760, was purchased by Jacques Kanon, from whom it takes its name. He was a Privateer - a polite word for a pirate! He initiated the building of the original grand château. In 1996 it was purchased by the owners of Chanel. Much investment has since taken place, replanting the neglected vineyards, shoring up the underground tunnels below, which were in danger of collapse, and giving the winemaking facilities a total makeover. Nicolas Audebert is head of winemaking and the wines, aged 50% in new oak for 18 months, are renowned for their minerality, dark fruit, liquorice scents and longevity. 2017 is very fine.
