One of 10 Fourth Growths listed in the Bordeaux classification of 1855, Château Beychevelle is a jewel of the Médoc, with fairytale architecture and outstanding wines to match. The label depicts a galley complete with sail, in honour of the time when the château was owned by Duc d’Epernon, Admiral of France, in the 16th century. The expression ‘baisse-vaille’ means ‘lower the sails’ and it later merged to become the name of the château – Beychevelle. Bordeaux suffered severe April frosts in 2017, but Beychevelle escaped untouched thanks to its proximity to the river. Harvest was early and with a new vat room, they were able to make the most of each parcel. Aged 60% in new oak, this is a fine, rich, elegant 2017 that will reward patience.
