Le Père Guillot 2017

Côteaux Bourguignons AOC

Using the new Coteaux Bourguignons appellation, this is a delightful red with plenty of fresh fruity charm. It’s made from Gamay, the Beaujolais grape, grown in southern Burgundy, and shows lots of moreish, juicy, cherry and summer berry character.

For a mid-weight red full of classic French charm, Le Père Guillot is a winner. Laurent Guillot is the winemaker, the second generation of his family to grow vines. For this Gamay he takes grapes from the very south of Burgundy, between Mâcon and Beaujolais, all grown on granite soils. This lends a seam of freshness and minerality to the juicy flavours. A portion of the grapes is vinified using ‘macération carbonique’, a technique that brings out even more fruity character in the wine. With no oak, this pure Gamay red is ideal served cool in warmer months. It is lovely to drink on its own, but well suited to white meats, fish such as tuna or swordfish, or lightly spiced dishes. With a little age, it will take on more Burgundian character.
