In the last 20 years, Argentina has risen to be a source of some of the world's finest reds. No wonder when names like Saint-Emilion's Premier Grand Cru Classé A Château Cheval Blanc is leading the way. Their founder, Pierre Lurton, ventured to Argentina in 1998 and fell in love with the 90-year-old Las Compuertas vineyard. It belonged to Terrazas de los Andes. The next year they purchased the 45-year-old La Consulta vineyard in Altamira and started a joint venture with Terrazas. This is their flagship red – finest, old-vine Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon from these two vineyards, aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 50% new, for 14 months. It's a powerful, yet elegant wine, intense with dense, complex black fruit and sweet smoky spice.
