More information
From humble beginnings, Champagne Cazals has risen to stellar heights. The house was founded by Ernest Cazals, a cooper from Hérault who sold barrels in Champagne. He fell in love with the region and in 1897 achieved his dream of establishing a Champagne house in Le Mesnil sur Oger, one of the region’s most highly rated villages. His grandson Claude is credited with inventing the gyropalette, which mechanised the riddling of bottles. Today Champagne Cazals is run by great granddaughter Delphine, who took charge aged just 28. From old Grand Cru vines in the Côte des Blancs, next to some great (and expensive) names (Krug and Salon), this fine 2009 is minerally and pure with excellent ripeness, subtle citrus and apricot fruit, and toastiness.
