Champagne Bollinger R.D. Extra Brut 2004

Awarded 96 points by Decanter and critic Richard Juhlin, this is a superb Bollinger vintage release. What’s more, this classic makes superb drinking already, or can be aged. From one of the very finest Champagne houses, RD 2004 is glorious fizz.

Hugh Johnson calls Bollinger “one of the ‘greats’ of Champagne” and says they make wine with “body, length, depth and every other dimension”. The RD 2004 comes from a rare vintage that was great in both quality and quantity. All the grapes are from cru vineyards, 88% of them Grand Cru. RD stands for ‘recently disgorged’, a concept devised by Madame Bollinger in the 1960s to create a new top-end cuvée. In essence the wine remains for nearly 13 years on its lees (the spent yeasts that settle after the second in-bottle fermentation) before disgorgement. The result is an exceptionally complex Champagne that stays remarkably fresh despite the years. This vintage is a treat to open now – or, for more honeyed praline notes, age a few years more.

"Great generosity, complexity, youthful harmony with orange peel, tarte-tatin, bread, roasted cashew" John Stimpfig, Decanter
