More information
The high scores and luscious, long-lived wines from Château Sansonnet should be of no surprise. Since its new owners in the 21st century, firstly the D'Aulan, then the Lefevere family, it has had input from top consultants Jean Michel Arcaute (Pomerol's Château Clinet), Stéphane Derenoncourt, Michel Roland and Jean-Luc Thunevin (Valandraud). It's a small estate, a contiguous, 7-hectare vineyard next door to Trottevieille, on the Saint Emilion plateau, and close to Pavie Macquin and Troplong Mondot. A gentle, gravity-fed fermentation, with ageing in 70% new French oak casks and the rest in clay amphorae, very much in vogue in Bordeaux, produce this powerful, dense and appealing claret, with a superb silkiness and great cellaring potential.
