The Perrin brothers’ Château de Beaucastel is probably the most iconic (and highly prized) Châteauneuf-du-Pape of all. 40km north, on the southern Rhône border, is the superior village of Vinsobres, granted its own AOC in 2006, and deservedly so. Planted on terraces at 300 metres, its vineyards produce both excellent, fragrant Syrah and rich, velvety Grenache. Its wines aren't as 'big' as Châteauneuf, but nevertheless offer layers of warm ripe fruit and spicy, herbal length at a modest price. The Perrin family have been making trailblazing wines since the start, nearly 500 years ago, combining the very best of tradition with state of the art winemaking. Les Cornuds is a fine, rewarding red, ideal with roast lamb or duck, or on its own.
