First established as a weekend hobby by three Sydney solicitors (one of them James Halliday), Brokenwood is now among Australia’s smartest wine labels. They bought land in the Brokenback Ranges that had been earmarked for a local cricket pitch, and picked their first vintage in 1973 with the help of family and friends, plus the legendary Len Evan’s Bentley for transportation! One of the original vineyards of the estate is the Graveyard, the Shiraz from which produces one of the most highly rated Hunter Valley red wines. The deep loam soils here produce a more floral character, with a freshness that lends the wine structure and finesse. A remarkable red that will age with grace. Decant early and serve with osso buco or shoulder of lamb.
