Matt Thomson has worked 40 vintages in the 23 years he’s been a winemaker. He’s travelled around the globe and consulted for some of the most famous names in the business, but finally he decided to make wine for himself. His Blank Canvas is the vineyard, he says, the grape his brush. A fan of the Austrian grape Grüner Veltliner, Matt encouraged his friend the grower Malcolm Adams to plant it. 2013 is Matt’s first release of this wine and it’s picked up five top awards from Decanter, Jancis Robinson and three leading Kiwi critics. It was fermented mostly in stainless steel, then a quarter went into large, part-new oak barrels to bring creamy complexity and weight to the wine. Luscious, balanced and long – ideal with creamy white meat dishes.
