Bajoz Roble 2017

Toro DO

This elegant Tempranillo may only be 13.5%, but it has lovely concentration and depth thanks to vines up to 40 years old. It’s from a well established cellar in Spain’s highly regarded Toro region. It offers bright cherry fruit with a kiss of oak.

Three hours NW of Madrid, with its parched, baked red soils, is Toro. For 1,000 years this ancient land has grown vines and has made some of the blackest richest reds. In local folklore, it's said that King Alfonso XI claimed “I have a bull (Toro) who makes wine and a lion who drinks it." This is the story that inspired Felix Solís from the renowned winemaking clan and started his Toro winemaking project. He has spent a decade getting together 100 growers to contribute grapes to make his special King inspired red. And this is his first vintage. With winemaker Maria Melendez, they've used all old-vine Tempranillo (here known as Tinta del Toro), hand-picked and aged in barrel for three months. Silky with rich, dark fruit – a fine food red.

"Imagine the silky-smoothness of Rioja, charged with extra rich, dark red fruits" Tony Laithwaite
