Barón de Barbón wines always stand out for their supreme quality and value, as you’ll know if you’re a fan of the standard Rioja. The family cellar was founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, the latest in a long line of winemakers, but when he retired the winery was sold. In 1982 one of his sons – Julián Murúa Entrena – repurchased the bodega to continue the family tradition. Now Julián’s talented son, Javier, has joined him. Their vineyards lie in the premium Alavesa, where grape quality was good in 2013. This mellow Reserva was aged for two years in both French and American oak barrels to lend a lavish layer of spicy complexity. It’ll show at its best with roast lamb or game, its redcurrant notes complementing the flavours of the meat.
